[What is this game?]

Chronicles of Forgotten Islands (or 'CoFI' for short) is a text-based 2D adventure RPG that I'm making with Unity, where you assume the role of an amnesiac protagonist who has to get down to the bottom of their predicament by traversing a fantasy world and interacting with the world's inhabitants.

[What is the gameplay loop of this game?]

In this game, you are expected to travel between locations, complete quests for money and fame (or infamy), fight enemies via a turn-based combat system inspired by jRPGs and mechanically similar projects, gain experience, and learn about the residents of the Known World that you encounter along the way.

[What is this page?]

This page is dedicated to the development of a demo version of the game. In course of the demo, which is the prologue to the overarching story, the player, much like the protagonist, will get walked through the main game mechanics that this project is expected to offer to the player in the full game.

[Is this game SFW or NSFW?]

Originally, I was planning to make a NSFW game, and while I still envision the end product as having explicit sexual content, in this demo, the worst you can expect are innuendoes spoken by characters or written in encyclopedia entries. There will be a sexually tense episode by the very end of the complete demo, but everything will stay behind closed doors, if you catch my drift ;)

[Is there anything else I should know about the demo?]

After finishing the currently available demo content, you will be teleported to one of the two areas that I used for testing game mechanics, the unpolished versions of which can be playtested there. Of course, these mechanics are not final. The most 'unfinal' thing at the moment is combat as a whole, which I will keep polishing until the demo is completed. For now, both allies and enemies pick random actions and the stat system is also barely developed, so there's still much to be done (stats do exist, and they are properly calculated based on various factors, but don't affect combat as much as they should, yet).

[So, what is the current plan?]

My top priority at the moment is to finish the demo. Once I finish it and polish the mechanics adequately, I'll evaluate the reception of this project. If it goes completely unnoticed and/or the reception is mixed, I'll probably abandon the project and move on with my life. If the reception is more or less positive, I'll add the NSFW elements, and then continue the development past the demo.

[Can I do anything to support the development?]

So, if you've played and enjoyed the current version of the demo and see glimpses of promise in my project, please let me know! It's always easier to work on something when you know that you are not doing it in vain :)

[Debug Key Commands]

During character creation:

  • Insert = Unlock peculiarities;
  • Delete = Lock peculiarities;

While in combat:

  • Insert = Deplete player party health;
  • Delete = Deplete enemy party health;
  • Home = Replenish player party health and stamina;
  • End = Replenish enemy party health and stamina;
  • Backspace = Assume control over all characters; 

Anytime (test areas):

  • PageUp = Complete all stages of test quest;
  • PageDown = Restart test quest;
  • L.Alt = Add 'Satiated' perk;
  • R.Alt = Remove 'Satiated' perk;

[Contributions]

I'm not against contributions! If you are an artist and want to have your art featured somewhere, I can easily arrange that as long as you don't expect me to pay for it. For one, I don't have a budget; for another, I can't transfer money abroad. If you're a writer/editor, and you think that my writing sucks (which it does, English isn't even my first language), I'd be grateful if you made it more palatable. With code, it's more complicated. I'm a novice, and my code (and the Unity project's overall structure) is kind of a mess, so you may not want to touch it with a ten-foot pole. By the way, contribution of ideas is also welcome!
